My colleague twenty-something: Do you consider yourself Entitled?
The reason I asked Time Magazine calls us the “ME ME ME” generation.
… And it bothers me.
The general line of thought is that our generation wants more than we deserve, that we are not willing to work for it. Our elders compare us to our past generations. They say we have no perseverance or following.
I want to challenge that idea. I want to challenge the notion that we are entitled. I want to challenge the notion that we think too much of ourselves.
I don’t think we think too much of ourselves Enough.
Times have changed.
We can’t go to school, get a bachelor’s degree and immediately find a nice job that will coast us for the next 40 years.
We cannot rely on big companies to take care of us. We cannot expect benefits or pensions.
Hell, we can’t even expect to read our resume.
Do you know of any factory work that could possibly supply 4 kids for a family ?!
We need to learn a new way of working in a world where things are always changing. It’s a different kind of rush now.
Allow me to introduce myself to you Three new truths.
Fact # 1: College is dead.
Nowadays, in college you can learn very few things that you cannot learn on your own outside of the traditional “classroom”.
(Yeah Al that sounds pretty crap to me, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either,
If you are really interested in a particular subject, you are not There is Go to college for it. You can read 20 to 50 books on the same subject, get exactly the same and pay $ 100,000-200,000 less.
Find out what makes sense to you and then follow through–You don’t have to be within the confines of a university to find your calling aggressively. Start a meaningful project instead.
Some ideas came to my mind:
- Learn a martial art (I recommend Jiu Jitsu. Just saying …)
- Master Chess
- Travel the world
- Learn a language and actually immerse yourself in the culture
- Write a book
- Create positive change in a poor country
It really doesn’t matter. The point is, it’s up to you.
Fact # 2: You no longer have to pay your arrears.
This is going to make some people very angry.
We have all heard of the struggles of previous generations. We have all heard of the honor of paying your arrears. Everyone’s grandfather climbed the school in the snow and walked both ways.
You see, there’s a lot to be said for hard work… but I personally don’t see any respect for incompetence.
With the speed of the internet and the way industries are advancing, things are happening faster than ever You can gain traction A lot Faster now.
There is no point in wasting years waiting for someone else to give you your big break.
There is no longer a “line” that you have to wait for. You don’t have to go from “A” to “C” and go through the point “B”
Take my story as an example …
I created a huge following by writing a ton of content and providing it for free. I wrote about my experience as a frustrated twenty-something Those who knew that there should be more than nine to five lives. I found an audience that resonated with my message–Or rather, they found me.
Now I teach people like you How to build a business using the skills you already have.
I am not a ‘teacher’ in the conventional sense. I don’t go to school for that. I created for myself a career that did not exist.
I effectively omitted B to go from A to C.
Point here: you don’t have to start from ground-zero. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. In this case, creativity is the cure.
Fact # 3: Making money doesn’t have to be hard.
You do not want to be frustrated if you cannot get the right pitch so invest in a good capo. No one ever said that you had to suffer first before you became rich and lived a full life.
When you are young and you are learning how to ride a bicycle, what do you think if the person who is teaching you is a professional cyclist? You don’t have to ask if they are in the top ten Tour de France?
By no means!
And that’s totally fine!
Your stupid uncle Gerald is right to teach you how to ride a bike. He may not be a world class cyclist, but he is better than you! And he can teach you. That Enough.
This is the way to make money in today’s world: Find a problem that other people have and figure out how to solve that problem as quickly (and thoroughly) as possible. They will pay you.
That’s how we all start thinking about making more money. It’s not about being an expert All Time. It’s about becoming an expert Over Time becomes your work, the manifestation of your personality. What do I call Full.
This is a controversial way of thinking.
I don’t want you to settle for less because most people have been doing this for years.
I am challenging the previous idea. We all have and they are not serving us. No more. Let’s throw them away.
Are you with me
